Hate It or Love It? Under Armour will be Official Uni of MLB

UA MLB

Via press release:

“Beginning in the 2020 MLB season, Under Armour will be the exclusive MLB provider of all on-field uniform components including jerseys featuring prominent Under Armour branding, baselayer, game-day outerwear, and year-round training apparel for all 30 MLB Clubs.”

Big news for baseball this week, Under Armour will take over for Majestic as the official on-field uniform of MLB.  Beginning in 2020, you will begin to see the “UA” logo displayed on MLB jerseys and other on-field items.  According to the release, “Under Armour and Fanatics expect to offer an assortment of new fan gear apparel and accessories at retail, prior to the 2020 season.”

First things first, what’s your gut reaction?

If you hate it, why?  What is there to hate?  Were Majestic uniforms so spectacular that uniforms from any other company would be unacceptable?  I mean, I never noticed.  Have you seen Under Armour make uniforms that you haven’t liked?

Those look pretty nice, don’t they?  I saw some haters on Instagram (crazy right?) talking about ugly Maryland football unis and other nonsense… the concept uniform strategy is a mirror image of what Nike does with Oregon, and I’m sure Nike would agree the uni concepts don’t always work out.  I have seen some of the sickest and some of the most hideous designs I’ve ever seen on those two teams—its called trial-and-error, a strategy that very few companies have the luxury or the imagination to implement on blue chip athletes like these two innovation giants do.  Majestic certainly wasn’t that company.

I just can’t see how this isn’t entirely awesome for baseball.  Under Armour is clearly a trend-setting brand in a sport that needs that badly.  They also have some of our favorite ballplayers on their brand roster, and it will be interesting to see if UA involves these players in the uniform development process.

On another note, Commissioner Manfred was another good pick-up for MLB.  He’s making moves to make baseball more marketable and more exciting.  Yes, please.

Check out the full roundtable with Harold Reynolds, Cal Ripken, Jr., Francisco Lindor, Brandon Phillips, Freddie Freeman, Rick Porcello, Clayton Kershaw, and Brian Dozier.  At 18:20, I make an off-screen cameo (nbd)…

UA also put some cool cleats on display just to kind of hype the event, all 30 teams got their own custom:

More from the @underarmour x @mlb announcement. These are fiyaaa ???
