Francisco Lindor’s New Balance Cleat for 2019, the “Cypher 12”

Francisco Lindor, who suffered an ankle injury just a few days before the start of the season, has a reason to smile… a new signature cleat for the 2019 season, the New Balance Cypher 12, seen here in the La Familia colorway.

Built for one of the most exciting players in the game, the new design carries over many of the same features from Lindor’s previous cleat, the COMPv1.  Like the COMPv1, which is still available, the glass composite studs are designed to perform like metal, but feel like the softer molded cleats that many MLB players wear.

The cleat also features a suede and rubberized mesh sock-like upper, making for a cleat that is both light and durable.

The sock-like upper is a noted departure from New Balance’s other models such as the 3000 and 4040 series, which feature a more traditional tongue construction. This matches a general trend shifting towards single-piece uppers in order to provide a sneaker-like feel on the diamond, seen in cleats like the adidas Icon Boost 4. Also of note is the lacing system wrapping around the forefoot, similar to the new adidas Afterburner 6 model debuted by Trea Turner.

This design is a welcome approach from New Balance. The company already has a stable of high-profile players, and many amateur players swear by their cleats based on their comfort and durability. New Balance’s latest models, in our opinion, were a little too generic, but the Cypher 12 combines industry-leading tech with a clean look, inspired by Lindor.  The tropical heel adds that flamboyance that we have grown to love about Francisco Lindor.

With his mega-watt smile, Lindor is one of the most marketable players in the league.  He’s very style conscious off-the-field, and NB & Franky did a nice job bringing his off-field style on-field with the Cypher 12s. Looking forward to seeing what Franky has in store when he finally gets these beauties on the field.
