20 Opening Day Items We Wanted to See | Crawford PE’s, Mookie, Carp, Salvy

Had we not been in the middle of an unprecedented global crisis, today would have been the best day of the year… Opening Day. Here’s what we might have seen if it really happened.

BCraw’s PE’s

We would have seen Brandon Crawford’s PEs, which are always a big deal for WPW. We’re not sure if these Trout 6s (Dick’s for $30-$98) are the ones—they look similar to last year’s, but Crawford always brings the heat.

Mookie in Dodger Blue

When Opening Day finally comes around, Mookie in a Dodger uni will be a scary sight for NL West foes.

The Dodgers 1-9, headlined by Betts, Seager, Bellinger, Turner, and Muncy, is as good as any in baseball.

Lindor’s Fresh Kicks

Another top 5 swaggy shortstop, Francisco Lindor’s cleats for this year look as clean as ever.

These are the new COMPv2 (glass composite) model available at Dick’s for $140.

Marcus Semien Back to Work

Having had the chance to see A’s shortstop Marcus Semien play a lot last year, his steely demeanor constantly reminds me of another Bay Area star athlete, Klay Thompson… the low-key “silent assassin” type. Last year, without much fanfare, Semien trailed only the Astros’ Alex Bregman and MVP Cody Bellinger in WAR while playing 162 games at one of the most demanding positions on the field.

Semien’s Franklin CFX Pro and Nike Alpha Huarache are low-key like Semien.

MadBum in the Desert

Madison Bumgarner should have been a Giant for life, but the Giants’ lack of competitiveness in the NL West opened the door for Bum’s exit—and the end of an era. To add insult to injury, now the Giants will have to see the postseason legend and future Hall of Famer four or five times a year as he has joined the NL West rival DBacks. While the division is the goal, the DBacks’ signing of Bumgarner makes them the favorite in a one-game Wild Card, too.

D-Rod Bouncing Back

Dereck Rodriguez is looking for a bounceback season after coming on strong in 2018. When we saw him, the flow, the Wilson A2000 B2, and the New Balance 3000v4s (available at Dick’s and Baseball Express) were all clicking.

KC’s Double Play Combo

For some players, the stoppage of play has a silver lining. Adalberto Mondesi, and his blueberry Easton C51 12.25″ I-Web, have had a little more time than expected to recover from injury. With Mondesi expecting to be ready for Opening Day now, he and Whit Merrifield will form one of the only double play combos capable of hitting .300 and stealing 30 bags each.

Jose Ramirez at His Best

Another bounce back candidate, Jose Ramirez’ first half of 2019 was bad. In the second half, though, he returned to his MVP form, slugging .739 in 44 games.

Ramirez, like Mondesi, is an Easton guy, wearing their C43 model, available in a tan colorway for $260 at Baseball Express.

Ramirez has also been rocking Nike Alpha Huarache PEs ($38-$71 at Dick’s), Evoshield PRO-SRZ leg guard (Dick’s for $65), and Franklin CFX Pro Full Color Chrome ($35 at Franklin Sports).

Cargo in Mariners Green

Carlos Gonzalez, WPW Hall of Famer, is hoping to bring the Swingman back to Seattle, rocking the throwback Swingman MVP 2 cleats with Ken Griffey Jr.’s silhouette. You can still find these cleats on eBay.

The San Diego Infield

Brian Dozier, who took a back seat to Asdrubal Cabrera during the Nationals dream run in 2019, still managed 20 bombs and has just as good of a shot at the Padres second base job as anybody. With Dozier at second, the Padres infield of Machado, Tatis, Dozier, and Hosmer has got as much pop as any in the league. Dozier stuck with his well-worn and faded G4 gamer from previous seasons, which you can get here.

The Cleveland Infield

Cesar Hernandez, a sneaky pickup for the Indians, is wearing a Wilson A2000 that looks like a DP15 with a one-piece web. He’ll combine with Ramirez, Lindor, and Carlos Santana to make another great group in the infield. You can shop DP15s at Baseball Express and Dick’s.

Corey Seager’s Glove

If we had an award for “Gnarliest Glove,” Corey Seager’s would win unanimously. Its hard to see from the photo, but its a very “goopy” situation. You can get a fresh and clean Rawlings Heart of the Hide CS5 here for $260.

Seager swung a much cleaner 271 cut from Trinity, available via Trinity Bats.

Nick Ahmed Defending the Hardware

Back-to-back Gold Glover Nick Ahmed has won both trophies with the same gamer. We spoke with Nick about his Mizuno MZP 60 game glove, and he said that he got this glove at the end of 2017, and used it for the full 2018 and 2019 seasons. You can shop 4 different 11.25″ Mizuno gloves at Dick’s.

Matt Carpenter’s “Butterscotch” Glove

Matt Carpenter’s beard was in mid-season form, but it was his Rawlings glove that popped on the field.

Its actually a stock glove that Rawlings calls “Butterscotch,” a fantastic name for a glove that would look good with any uniform. Shop Ms. Butterscotch at this link for $200.

Salvy’s Return

Salvador Perez, after losing the entire 2019 season to Tommy John surgery, will make his return in 2020. His Rawlings gear is fire and Rawlings offers a very similar set named for Salvy (chest protector and leg guards) here for $260.
