Russell Martin tried a few different chest protectors in Spring Training and settled on the Yadi model from Rawlings. This chest protector is the only one in the game (that we know of) that’s made of leather. Our best guess as to why its leather is that Yadi asked Rawlings for the flattest possible surface to better block baseballs, while still maintaining sufficient protection. The leather seems to allow for the use of thinner armor that softens those lines. The traditional synthetic style of chest protector is still pretty flat but the thick individual units of armor create uneven edges, even though the spaces between are basically non-existent. But what Yadi wants, he gets. And so does Russell.
Unfortunately this set was for sale for only a limited time and is no longer available. The 950x is a very similar alternative, available in 18 different color schemes.
