WPW History Lesson: The P72 by Louisville Slugger, the 3000 Hit Club Members’ Choice

Hitting .259 with 37 home runs in a five year minor league career will not normally earn you a place in history, but Les Pinkham, who played in the Tigers and Cardinals organizations from 1950-1954, continues to influence the game.  The bat he ordered from Hillerich and Bradsby, now called the P72, has been used by numerous players who are in, or will soon be joining the Hall of Fame.

3000 Hit Club members Robin Yount, Cal Ripken Jr, and Derek Jeter (profile) alone have used the P72 to amass over 9500 hits.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and just about every bat company has their version of the P72 profile, which is available in Ash, Maple, Birch, and even European Beech (for the sake of disclosure, Rocky has just become a rep for Mine Bats).

  1. Is anyone NOT a rep for Mine bats?

  2. What year is the jeter bat with his name in the box on your site? Was any issued to jeter around 2012?

    1. 2013 is when this article was published. and i think that’s right when they were making the bats in this way.
