I get a Christmas-ey feeling the night before I visit the Astros clubhouse. I just know I’m going to see something sick. If its not Correa’s new adidas PEs (not in yet), then maybe it’ll be a new Easton custom for Alex Bregman (still waiting), or George Springer’s latest Nike player exclusive cleats (got those). Fact is, the one thing I hope for most is new Wilson heat for one of the most swagged out double play duos the game has ever seen. That wish came true today.
Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa both had brand new Wilson gloves to show off, reminiscent of previous years with some color tweaks and a little Dat Dude flavor thanks to the “Super Snakeskin” as Altuve called it.
Altuve got the player exclusive custom treatment from Wilson’s glove team, and we’ll expect him to game this glove in 2019. He was already working it in at Spring Training. While there’s nothing quite like it right now (Wilson has only ever offered 3 Snakeskin gloves, none currently in stock), you’ll see this as part of Wilson’s game model offerings in August.
The glove is an absolute smokeshow in my opinion, but would love to hear what you think about it.
Carlos Correa’s new Wilson glove didn’t have the full Super Snakeskin back like Altuve’s, but still got the desired effect.
Correa’s Wilson is a mostly black glove with light tan web and wrist, and orange binding and welting popping off the screen.
You won’t see a flashier double play combo in the game, however, Correa may not game this as early as Altuve. The expectation is that he’ll break it in for next year, but that’s just speculation. If he feels good with it sooner, it’ll play. After all, he was already using it in practice.
While Correa’s won’t be available in August, we’re expecting to see Super Snakeskin make its way onto the custom builder at some point (date unknown).
In related news, Wilson put together an incredible giveaway this year, where you can WIN YOUR TEAM A WILSON GLOVE DAY. All you have to do is give your name, e-mail and team name and you could win (restrictions apply, no purchase necessary).
“You could get the pro treatment and all your glove questions answered when the Wilson Glove Team, including Master Craftsman Shigeaki Aso and Product Manager Ryan Smith, come to your hometown and hand-deliver brand new A2000s for you and your teammates.”
