To mix it up a bit, we’ll be highlighting the MLB.com’s top 10 prospects. The reason I felt like you guys would want to see this is because of our Instagram, @whatproswear. The way you all have responded when we highlight one of these young guys convinced me that I needed to feature them on the site—and here we go:
Tyler Skaggs, traded from the Angels for Dan Haren in 2010, is a lefty with great command of a low 90s fastball, a sharp letters-to-knees curveball, and a developing changeup. Skaggs is a lot like us in that he grew up wanting to look like his idol, Randy Johnson. Skaggs admitted he “tried to make (his) mechanics like (Johnson’s)” as a kid. As a lanky lefty, I don’t think there is a better model than RJ.
A fun fact, Skaggs told MiLB.com that if he was pitching in Game 7 of the World Series, he would be listening to Jay-Z’s “Black Album” or Waka Flocka’s “Flockaveli” before the game. Can’t say I know much Waka Flocka but the Black Album would work for me.
Skaggs wears a glove very similar to Johan Santana’s. His model, a brown-colored Rawlings PRO1000-9JB, is available online but not in Skaggs’ color.
Before he came to the big club, Skaggs was using the black version, seen below:
I used that photo because you can actually see the model number, but the black PRO1000-9JB glove he used in games actually had white stitching.
On his feet, Skaggs wears the Under Armour Yard III in an exclusive black/red/white combo that looks unassuming but sharp (see below). These cleats are available online in select colors.
