Nike’s Zoom Freak 1 Shoe is Unveiled with Signature Giannis Antetokounmpo Detailing (Now Available)

By Jason Liao

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s long-anticipated first signature shoe has finally been unveiled, with added nods to his heritage and love of Kobe sneakers.

Update: Giannis’ Freak 1 shoe is available now at Eastbay.com for $120.

The Nike Zoom Freak 1 was designed with Giannis’ rangy movements in mind, with multidirectional traction being particularly aggressive at the pinky toe section.

The traction extends up in this area with rubber clips, similar to the midsole on the Kyrie signature line. This was done up to aid with Antetokounmpo’s extremely long-striding euro steps, providing control when Giannis goes side to side.

Further performance features include two stacked Zoom Air units in the heel for extra bounce when landing.

The low-cut and lightweight Zoom Freak 1 can be compared to another signature line with the Kobe models. This seems intentional as the Greek Freak has played in Kobe sneakers for most of his career, as you can see in Giannis Antetokounmpo’s locker.

Nike invested a lot in Giannis when they re-signed him to a long-term, $9 million a year deal after Antetokounmpo flirted with offers from the likes of adidas. This investment included branding for the unassuming Milwaukee Bucks superstar. A signature logo was created by Nike to not only feature Giannis Antetokounmpo’s GA initials but also to provide a nod to his Nigerian and Greek heritage.

More typography and secondary logos were also created for Giannis’ apparel.

All this attention given to a hooper that just wanted to make the NBA, whose hard work made Giannis Antetokounmpo an MVP and a Nike signature athlete.
